LIFESKILLS (PSHE & Citizenship)

In Lifeskills (PSHE) and Citizenship there is the opportunity for students to reflect upon their own ideas and beliefs (religious or otherwise) throughout the programme of study, in particular when they explore thought-provoking or controversial issues such as abortion.

Students are encouraged to share reasoned viewpoints and to respect the views of others through debate and discussion. They are asked to reflect upon their own learning and progress via the use of their individual Progress Records and also through the work that is undertaken in class. Students learn about the civil and criminal law as part of their Citizenship lessons and also in relation to the laws surrounding sexuality; drugs and alcohol for example.

A central focus of the PSHE curriculum is that of personal and social responsibility, through positive healthy relationships that acknowledge the diversity of cultural, religious, socio-economic backgrounds. Students learn about their community and how to act to improve it though active citizenship and volunteering. The fundamental British values of democracy;  the rule of law; liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs are delivered in many lessons on government and democracy; human rights; local, national and international and global citizenship.

Students learn about the political system in Britain and beyond and the importance of making a positive contribution. They learn about the diversity of the heritage around them by exploring topics such as their own family and the types of families around them. The importance of tolerance and mutual respect is integral to the lessons, whether they explore gender, race, religion, culture or other forms of beliefs.
