The introduction of the Academy’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) means that communication between staff, pupils and parents/carers can be taken to a more advanced level across all aspects of school life. From a curriculum point of view this will enable staff to enter tasks that pupils need to complete outside of the classroom which can also be viewed by parents/carers. In this way everyone can be clear about the type, frequency and amount of Home Learning that each pupil needs to complete.
The expectation will be: Staff enter a brief description of the Home Learning to be done and when the task should be completed by. Pupils and parents/carers can view these entries at any time.
The following is set out as a guide as to the average amount of time that should be spent on Home Learning per week. There may be fluctuations at different times of the year depending on topics, assessments or exam preparations.
KS3 – Year 7 and 8
- 30 - 60 minutes per week for each Core subject (English, Maths, Science)
- 30 minutes for other subjects.
KS4 – Year 9, 10, 11
- 30 - 60 minutes per week for each full GCSE equivalent.
KS5 – Year 12 and 13
- AS courses – 3 hours per week per subject
- A2 courses – 5 hours per week per subject
The Academy operates a Homework club in the library after school from 3:00pm – 4:00pm every day for students to access adult support and use the school’s resources. There is also provision for students to remain on site until 5:25pm by arrangement with their teacher for them to use the school’s resources and ICT facilities to support their learning.
If you have any concerns regarding the home learning that your son/daughter has been set, please contact their form tutor in the first instance. If there is a question regarding one subject area, please contact the head of that subject. The most efficient way to contact staff is via email. All our staff email addresses can be found here. Alternatively you may wish to write a letter in the student planner or by telephone via the main school reception.
