Background to the names of the houses

Our Academy is named after Sir Christopher Hatton who was an important member of Queen Elizabeth’s advisors and inner circle, as detailed in Malcolm Deacon’s recent biography ‘The Courtier & The Queen’. In this fascinating book you can read about Hatton’s exploits and his rivalry for Elizabeth’s affection and attention.

Within this group of advisors, generous hosts and explorers working on behalf of the Queen were Burghley, Drake, Raleigh and Walsingham who were all important men during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and these trusted men were all connected by various means.

The House system at Hatton involves four houses: Burghley, Drake, Raleigh and Walsingham.
