Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Key Stage 3 Curriculum:

In Year 7 students follow a short structured course which introduces key Drama skills and vocabulary that will be developed over the course of their time in KS3. Students are encouraged to be imaginative and creative, and will build cooperation and communication skills with confidence.

In Year 8 the scheme of work deals with and addresses social and personal issues such as bullying, parent/teenager relationships, male/female stereotyping, racism, drug abuse and crime. We also explore theatre in a practical context, through working with a contemporary play.

Key Stage 4 GCSE Drama

The course requires students to be able to create and analyse drama through practical and written units.

Component 1: Devising theatre (40%) Internally assessed, externally moderated

Students participate in the creation, development and performance of a piece of devised theatre in response to a range of stimuli. Students have the opportunity to be either an actor or designer.

The students will be assessed on

  • The final performance/design
  • A portfolio of supporting evidence including evaluation of the final performance/design

Component 2: Performing from a Text (20%) externally assessed by visiting examiner

Students study two extracts from the same performance text. They will participate in a total of two performances, one of each extract. Students can be assessed on either acting or design (set, sound, lighting or costume)

Component 3: Interpreting Theatre – Written Examination (40%) 

Section A: Set Text

A series of questions on one set text from a choice of eight:

  1. DNA by Dennis Kelly
  2. 1984 by Duncan Macmillan and Robert Icke
  3. Blue Stockings by Jessica Swale
  4. 100 by Neil Monaghan, Diene Petterle & Christopher Heimann  
  5. An Inspector Calls by JB Priestley
  6. A Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol
  7. Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
  8. The Crucible by Arthur Miller

Section B: Live Theatre Review

Two questions requiring analysis and evaluation of a given aspects of a live theatre production seen during the course.

Key Stage 5 Edexcel Drama and Theatre

The course demands practical, creative and communication skills in almost equal measure. Students extend their ability to create Drama and Theatre, either in a performing or production role. Students are required to write about Drama and to develop their powers of analysis to become an informed critic. The course involves taking part in Drama productions, studying plays and practitioners as well as frequent visits to the theatre.

The Pearson Edexcel A Level in Drama and Theatre consists of two non-examination assessment components and one externally examined paper:

Component 1: Devising

  • Non-examination assessment 40% of the qualification 
  • Devise an original performance piece.
  • Use one key extract from a performance text and a theatre practitioner as stimuli. 
  • Performer or designer routes available.

Component 2: Text in Performance

  • Live examination assessment 20% of the qualification
  • group performance/design realisation of one key extract from a performance text.
  • A monologue or duologue performance/design realisation from one key extract from a different performance text.
  • Centre choice of performance texts.

Component 3: Theatre Makers in Practice Written examination 40% of the qualification

  • Live theatre evaluation – choice of performance.
  • Practical exploration and study of a complete performance text – focusing on how this can be realised for performance.
  • Practical exploration and interpretation of another complete performance text, in light of a chosen theatre practitioner – focusing on how this text could be reimagined for a contemporary audience.
  • Centre choice of 15 performance texts 
  • Choice of eight practitioners
